its a bit wierd, i had 4900ish today, when i died i lost around 900ish. perhaps i saved at certain point. but if i would have died after loosing those 900ish, i would have lost more

You can't save axp, which is intended and not a bug.

Its intended that you only lose a certain part of your axp when you die (don't have time to find the thread that says so atm).  At the moment the the amount is ridiculous, though, with people losing all but 170/1400 or 900/4900.
